In this issue: 5S 2nd step: Seiton - Arrange essential things in order for easy access

As I told you last week, managers have to care that people like to come to their workplace, and that they are proud of being at their workplace. People who take pride in their workplace tend to have high morale and are likely to produce high quality products and services.

So far, I introduced 5S and the first step: Seiri

This week I will tell you more about the second step: Seiton, or Straighten, or Set in Order (actually the English Translation is Orderliness).

Seiton is about locating and placing items in an organization. It determines the rate at which things can be located or placed.

Seiton emphasizes on:

• functional placement of parts, tools and materials
• clearly designated names and places
• easy-to-read notice boards
• quick and easy retrieval of documents, parts and tools

This can be accomplished by

• painting / color coding floors
• zoning and placement marks
• removal of old and obsolete notes on notice boards
• creating shadow boards for tools (drawers are a waste of time to open and close them)
• creating cabinets for storing cleaning supplies and materials used occasionally

So keep in mind:

Everything has a place and everything is in it's place to allow for easy and immediate retrieval
